What Exactly do we mean by the terms
“Green Business” or “Socially Responsible Organization?”
Today, the terms are essentially synonymous because most “green” businesses are socially responsible and vice-versa. Most people associate the term “green” with the growing “green” movement of environmental and social consciousness to address and combat issues such as world pollution, starvation, and social injustice. To put it simply, social responsibility is the force that drives green businesses, non-profits and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
From a business perspective, “green” businesses do not necessarily have to be centered around the ecological and environmental industries. Instead, such businesses have been commonly characterized as those which adhere to the “Triple Bottom Line” measure of values and a commitment to “corporate social responsibility”. Based upon these values, such businesses are sometimes referred to as “Not Just for Profits”.
The core values of the “Triple Bottom Line” are people, planet, and profit.
“People” refers to fair, beneficial, and socially responsible business practices toward labor, the community and region in which an organization conducts its business. “Corporate Social Responsibility” refers to the obligation to consider the triple bottom line in all aspects of their corporate operations.
“Planet” refers to sustainable and renewable environmental practices. “Sustainable” refers to business practices that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. “Renewable” refers to the utilization of natural resources which are naturally replenished for materials and energy.
“Profit” refers the economic benefit enjoyed by the host society and the lasting economic impact that the organization has upon the economy.
